RAG WEAVING GIMMICKS and TRICKS
Useful tips for rag weavers and others

A "gimmick" is a tricky device, and a "trick" is a crafty performance, a clever practice. Learn dozens of them, picked up all over the US from rag weavers and discovered in the instructor's own rag weaving business. Many are useful in all kinds of weaving, some are relevant only to weaving with rags; but all will make your weaving more efficient and the finished project longer lasting, more beautiful, and more finely crafted. You will see most of the gimmicks; many tricks will be demonstrated. Bring your own gimmicks and tricks along with you to share with others.

WEARABLE RAGS
Clothing created with fabric strips

This is an overview of clothing made from or incorporating fabric strips. You will look at slides and samples of garments woven, knitted, and crocheted from strips of fabric, including the instructor's Glad Rags, Catherine Mick's rag fashions, picture rags, and others. Learn how to make a long continuous bias strip and other handy tricks for creating "rag" clothing. See how to combine bias-cut rayon challis snips with rayon or cotton chenille. Focus on color and design.

CHENILLE APPEAL
How to work with chenille yarns

Chenille (means caterpillar in French) is caressing, comforting, and comes in flattering, heavenly colors but requires thoughtful design and careful handling. Talk will focus on color, design, and gimmicks and tricks for weaving with chenille yarns. Students will see pictures, slides, and samples and hear about color theories and designing stripes and plaids, as well as techniques that can tame tricky chenille yarns.

OOPS! A MISTAKE!
Some thoughts on goofing up

There are dozens of wonderful ways to think about mistakes — in weaving and elsewhere. Weavers so often try to be perfect, but isn't perfection the enemy of good? You can change your thinking about mistakes or find ways to use them creatively. Come for a lively discussion about goofing up.

THE POWER OF COLOR
Lecture on color

Learn about color in many cultures and about the ancient art of color therapy, as well as those good old color theories and systems — that we can never quite remember. Color is delicious, not scary. There are no bad colors or color combinations. Proportion is the key to making color harmonies work. Hear and see how wonderful and powerful color can be for weavers. Instructor will bring many rag rug samples from her custom-order business — bold and beautiful examples of powerful color.

CREATIVITY
Stalking the elusive elegant solution

What is creativity? How do you get it? How do you keep it? How do you nurture it and make it grow? How do you empower the artist within? You need quiet, patience, courage, inspiration, affirmation, intuition, mastery, and materials — and what else? Hear how these creative geniuses worked: Frank Lloyd Wright, Virgina Wolfe, Albert Einstein, Frederick Law Olmsted, Picasso, Van Gogh, Edith Wharton, Franklin Roosevelt, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Hear and talk about creativity, experience it, understand it a little better, and be prepared to be more creative in your life and in your weaving.
